Gone are the days when Disc Jockeying is for men only. Today, increasing number of Nigerian women are spinning the deck and locking the beat down tight! Beyond simply being in the business, they are ruling and giving the men a run for their money.
Here are a few of the best of them!
DJ Rosie
DJ Rosie brands herself as “Nigeria’s $exiest DJ” and stays true to that tag. She’s based in Los Angeles but is a native of Lagos. Her style leans towards a blend of HipHop, Elector and Pop. Though based in LA, once in a while she pops into Nigeria and tours some of the top clubs.
DJ Cuppy
Florence Otedola aka DJ Cuppy is daughter of the Billionaire Owner of Forte Oil- Femi Otedola. Music is serious business to this young lady. She once interned at Jay Z’s entertainment company Roc Nation INC. She recently completed her Masters in Musicology at New York.
In 2014 DJ Cuppy was the resident DJ at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban.
She has released a couple of mixtapes including the highly successful mixtape House Of Cuppy.
DJ Lambo
The tomboyish yet pretty DJ Lambo is one highly professional DJ.A self-professed feminist, she once said she has no respect for women who live off men. She is a regular & competent DJ at top events in Lagos and beyond. Her Mixtapes and singles are also worthy of note. Her latest production “The Motion” features an all-female mix of Nigeria’s top acts such as Seyi Shay. Cynthia Morgan & Eva Alordiah.
DJ Lambo is signed to Chocolate City.
DJ Frizzie
Steadily rising from Port Harcourt to nationwide significance, DJ Frizzie has skilled fingers at the disc. She has a released a few mixtapes- the latest being ‘Zouk Summer Love Mix’. “Zoux Summer Love Mix” is an hour of Zouk remixes of 26 international songs and one local song, ‘Lovinjitis’ by Wizboyy.DJ Frizzie also has quite a few awards up her sleeves.
DJ Soupamodel
Kehinde Olatunde aka DJ SoupaModel is a Nigerian –American whose prowess at spinning the disc got her to work with top international acts. She is the official DJ to T-Pain. She resides in Washington DC and is the CEO of a music production company MusicBlvdGroup. Internationally she has worked with Wyclef, Jason Derulo, Mims, Soulja Boy, Nappyboy to list a few. Locally she teamed with Tolu of Project Fame to produce a love song tagged “Arewa”.
DJ Switch
Rapper Obianuju Catherine Udeh aka DJ Switch is more popular for winning the first edition of XFACTOR Africa. Way beyond that, DJ Switch is an award winning DJ who has had her own fair share of spinning the discs at top events.
DJ Mystelle
DJ Mystelle is another female doing great work in the Disc spinning industry. She trained under highly reverred DJ Humility. A while back DJ Mystelle released collaboration with acts like MI and Yemi Sax.
DJ Toxiq
DJ Toxiq wears the dual hat of an artiste and DJ. She produced the hit song by Fuji Legend Alabi Pasuma’s Hip Hop Switch. She has also released a couple of successful mix tapes.
DJ Pieces
Peace Jacob also known as DJ Pieces is a beautiful DJ from eastern Nigeria. She has a series of mix tapes tagged Shattered Pieces Afro Edition where she features top African artistes. DJ Pieces is currently running her masters in Pennsylvania.
DJ Nana
Nanayat Abedoh aka DJ Nana is from Kogi State. The 25 year old began to make her mark in the DJ industry when she won “Airtel/Barcaddi Cool FM DJ Competition- she then went on to train at Jimmy Jatt Inc with DJ Jimmy Jatt. Since then, she has continued to grow in leaps and bounds.
At a time when many male DJs are partnering with top artistes, DJ Nana is not left behind. She partnered with Omowunmi on an inspirational track called Know.
