MILEY Cyrus has described how playing Hannah Montana, the role that shot her to fame, led to her developing serious body image issues and caused her to suffer anxiety attacks.
Cyrus made the revelations in the new issue of Marie Claire, which is out
in September. Playing the teen pop princess in the Disney Channel show, which first aired in 2006, gave her impossible beauty goals to live up to, she told the magazine.

The 22-year-old said: “From the time I was 11, it was, ‘You’re a pop star! That means you have to be blonde, and you have to have long hair, and you have to put on some glittery tight thing.’”
She went on: “I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn’t on that show, it was like, “Who the f*** am I?”

She said she worked 12-hour days on set, had coffee “’jammed down her throat” to keep her awake and even experienced her first period while shooting the show.

She said: “It was so embarrassing, but I couldn’t leave. And I was crying, begging my mom, ‘You’re going to have to put the tampon in. I have to be on set.’”
The Wrecking Ball singer, who has long since outgrown her Disney child star status, and now keeps
her hair short and her attitude much edgier, admitted that she still feels the pressure to look good and complained about current beauty standards.

“When you look at retouched, perfect photos, you feel like s**t. They lighten black girls’ skin. They smooth out wrinkles. Even when I get stuck on Instagram wondering, “Why don’t I look like that?” It’s a total bummer,” she said, apparently seeing no irony in the fact that in the same issue of Marie Claire she appears on the cover heavily made-up and decked in designer clothes.
