THE QUESTIONS CELEBRITIES WONT ANSWER

SOME stars are a little more sensitive than others — and if you want to interview them, you have to play by their rules.

Some don’t want to talk about their relationships. Others don’t want to
talk about their celeb nemesis. And others have certain expectations when it comes to being photographed.
These are the no-go zones Australian reporters have experienced when chatting with A-listers.

ARIANA GRANDE

For a pint-sized pop star, Ariana Grande had a list of diva demands so huge during her Australian promotional tour last year that it dwarfed her tiny frame.

A News Corp journalist invited to interview the star was instructed to steer clear of any delicate topics during interviews, including: Relationships/Dating/Ex-boyfriends, Mariah Carey, Sam & Cat/Jennette McCurdy, working/collaborating with Justin Bieber and her grandfather passing away
But it was the demands about how she wanted to be photographed that really went too far. An accompanying News Corp photographer was strictly told NOT to use natural light when shooting the singer and to ONLY shoot the left side of her face.

Grande then proceeded to check each frame after it was taken and asking for shots she wasn’t pleased with to be deleted.

After a few minutes she abandoned the shoot complaining to her reps that she was unhappy with how her top looked in the poses. After another 20 minutes of waiting for Grande to switch outfits, one of her representatives returned, demanding the photographer delete all his photos.

The photographer refused — and was later approached by a member of the singer’s security team who attempted to prevent him from closing the tailgate on his car as he stowed his equipment.
The singer then cancelled all further photography sessions while in Australia.

Her demands to only be shot from the left side made international headlines. So much so that we penned a letter to the pocket rocket pop star’s shunned right cheek in the wake of the scandal.

JAMES VAN DER BEEK

Let’s be honest, hear the name James Van Der Beek and you’ll instantly be reminded of Dawson’s Creek. For many of us, we grew up watching the sandy-haired teen heart-throb play Dawson Leery on one of our favourite TV shows.

But, fast-forward a decade or so and the actor, now 38 years old, isn’t interested in talking about the good ol’ days with Joey, Jen and Pacey, nor the success of the series that turned him into a household name.

That’s right, all Dawson’s Creek chitchat was off limits for Van Der Beek, and when one reporter boldly tried to take a trip down memory lane with Dawson (I mean James) during a phone interview, they were gruffly informed of two things:

— No, he no longer thought about ‘what if’ he hadn’t accepted the career-changing role.
— No, he didn’t want to discuss the possibility of a Dawson’s Creek reunion.
Ah well, it was worth a shot.

NICKI MINAJ
She’s rapped some of the dirtiest phrases you’ll ever hear, but that doesn’t mean nothing is off limits for Nicki Minaj.

There’s one thing the 32-year-old rap queen won’t discuss — and that’s other female rappers. Well, female rappers plus Mariah Carey. Minaj has had a number of reported feuds with other rappers — most notably Lil’ Kim — and she had a (famously) tense relationship with Mariah Carey when the pair were judges on American Idol.

So when her publicist warns you to absolutely avoid any topic that relates to these other women, you respect it. Because Nicki is queen.

GWEN STEFANI
While they only recently made their split official, Gwen’s marriage to Gavin Rossdale had been plagued with rumours of separation for years.

And even though they put on a solid front at red carpets and in front of paparazzi, their relationship wasn’t really a topic Gwen wished to venture in interviews.

Her publicity ruled out any questions about her marriage and kids. They wanted the focus to be on her music. Fair enough.

But when the lyrics to her new tune were about a lover who seemingly cheats, how could you not ask about how the songwriter’s personal life influenced the song?
The chat was swiftly wrapped.

ALLI SIMS
Remember Alli Sims? No, not many people do.
She’s Britney Spears’ second cousin who was the singer’s assistant in the mid 2000s.
They claimed to be BFF’s but on the weekend that Spears was hospitalised after a reported breakdown, Sims decided to go on a girls trip with some friends.
The two allegedly had a falling out and once she was cut out of the superstar’s life, little was heard of Sims. Until 2009.
That’s when I received an email from Sims’ manager offering up an interview to promote her debut single, Driving Blind.Y ep, apparently she was a singer too.
But even though the song was all about how she missed her famous second cousin, Sims and her manager were adamant that there were to be no questions about Britney Spears.
In a rather blunt email I explained that without a comment about Britney we had little to zero interest in chatting to Sims.
They had a change of heart and allowed “just a couple” of questions about the pop singer.
I don’t remember exactly what Sims said during our chat, but afterwards I remember being disappointed in myself for accepting an interview with a clearly publicity hungry wannabe who was willing to sell out her own family in order to get her name in the press.
Oh, and her song sucked.
